Yesterday: Mt. SAC
Today: Engineering Designer
Mt. SAC gives you a sense
of confidence. When I started in the Vocational English
as a Second Language (VESL) Program in the summer of 2000,
I wasn’t sure I’d be able to earn my associate’s
degree.
I had been in the United
States for only a few years and had limited English skills.
When I took my first class, I told my husband that I was
afraid I wouldn’t be able to make it.
But the professors at
Mt. SAC always encouraged me. They said I could do whatever
I put my mind to, and that’s exactly what I needed.
You have to pursue your goal and not give up.
I took computer-aided
drafting and manufacturing classes, and in my last semester
at Mt. SAC, I was hired by the City of West Covina as
a drafter. I graduated from Mt. SAC in 2002 with an associate’s
degree in Engineering Design Technology, and today, I
am a designer for an engineering firm in San Dimas.
One of my professors
at Mt. SAC taught me a lesson I'll never forget. He said
there are three kinds of people: those who never know
what’s happening, those who watch things happen,
and those who make things happen. I’ve always wanted
to be the kind who makes things happen. I’ll never
forget that. Everyone has the ability to do that. |
